How to Reach for Excellence
Have you ever wished that you could earn more money, make more friends, have better health, achieve a higher level of success? Achieve excellence at whatever you do?
Here’s a simple truth: Successful people aren’t naturally excellent at what they do — they work to be that way.
In a very inspiring chat with Juliet Ehimuan, we spoke about how to reach for excellence. Juliet leads Google’s business strategy in West Africa, is a member of the Forbes Coaches Council, and has received numerous awards for her outstanding contribution to the digital landscape in Africa. Forbes named her one of the top 20 power women in Africa, and London Business School “one of 30 people changing the world”.
In other words, Juliet knows how to reach for excellence. According to her, excellence is a way of being. You decide to make it your north star.
She shared her top 5 tips on how you can become the best version of yourself with me.
If you want to listen rather than read, check out the podcast episode here.

Tip 1: Clarity of purpose

Juliet says that the best way to influence the future is to create it. Life isn’t a series of random events. It’s important to be deliberate and to know where you’re going. If you’re not clear on what your destination is, you’re not going to go very far. Being clear on your purpose energises and fuels you.

Tip 2: Clarity of vision

There’s more to life than your job, and your purpose might go beyond your work. Think of the areas in your life that matter the most. Create a picture of what is most important to you. What are your aspirations, your desires? Juliet says to never let yourself be limited by the HOW, because it stops you from dreaming. Focus on the WHAT. What is the thing that calls and inspires you?

Tip 3: Robust plan of execution

A vision without a plan is wishful thinking. Think about what is strategic and tangible. Create a concrete plan and structure that moves you from where you are to where you want to be.

Tip 4: Mobilisation

The key to mobilise yourself lies in your belief-system. Limiting beliefs keep you back, while empowering beliefs lift you up. Be aware that there are facts, and there are the stories around the facts that you tell yourself. That’s where your beliefs come from. If a limiting belief holds you back, question the story you created around it, and create a new, empowering belief.

Tip 5: Time

Everyone’s day is 24 hours long. You can’t change that. But you can prioritise. Spend your time on things that move you closer to your vision. When you’re very clear about your vision, it makes it easier for you to decide what’s important and what isn’t. Start spending your energy in a way that serves you.
